Afflerbach Elementary (K-6)

Built in 1987, Afflerbach is one of the largest elementary schools in Cheyenne. It has a school wide Title I program and is located in Cheyenne's south side area. A multi-age Trailblazers* is a part of the Afflerbach community. The dedicated staff of Afflerbach focus on the needs of the students and use differentiated instruction to encourage individual student growth. An Extended Opportunities for Success program is offered before and after school for those identified students needing additional assistance. The Title programs and staff offer continued opportunities for support in learning and behavioral skills. School wide programs include Guided Reading, individualized computer assisted math, reading and language arts, and a literacy based language arts program. Afflerbach encourages and supports parent and community involvement. Some examples include the Foster Grandparents and the Family Literacy Partners. Community based programs include Boy and Girl Scouts, Wonder Kids - a before and after school day care program, and city recreational youth activities.
*Trailblazer, a K-6 academic high-potential program for qualified children, is available for students form throughout the district. It is also located at Pioneer Park.
Alta Vista Elementary (K-6)

Alta Vista Elementary is a modern two-story structure, built in 1987. During the summer of 2005, Alta Vista underwent a large renovation project that will included air conditioning and upgrading of flooring and lighting.
Alta Vista has two sections for grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 5. There is one section each for grades 4 and 6. This year will mark second year for full day kindergarten at Alta Vista.
Alta Vista has an active parent group that has assisted with the acquisition of technology, is supportive of total school programs and sponsors many school-wide activities. Student incentive programs in reading, math skills and other interventions have been designed to meet student needs. Alta Vista Elementary is a Title I School. These additional federal funds provide supplemental programs and supplies for students who are at-risk of not achieving standards. The school is one of the district sites for the Program for Adaptive Living Skills that is designed to meet the needs of a unique special education population.
Alta Vista's staff is in a Partnership with the University of Wyoming College of Education in developing future teachers.
The Alta Vista mission is defined in the acronym STAR, which expresses the goal to develop all students in the areas of social skills, task commitment, academic achievement and responsibility—all of which lead to successful students who will become successful adults.
Anderson Elementary (K-6)

Anderson Elementary is a three-section school housing grades K-6 with a student population of 400. The school maintains a district program called Therapeutic Learning Center for a select special education population. Anderson prides itself in being a Tribes TLC® school designed to maximize student learning and human development. The parent-teacher organization is an integral part of the school community.
Arp Elementary (K-6)

Arp Elementary is a two-section Title I school serving students in grades K-6. Title I funding supplements the school program with additional staff, full-time social worker, technology and an extended day aimed at meeting the needs of all students. Class-size reduction is maintained with small class size in first and second grades. All-day kindergarten was implemented in the fall of 2003, serving kindergarten students in an early language/literacy program, including a certified speech therapist for one-half day in each kindergarten classroom. Arp School received a National Distinguished Title 1 award in 2005 for closing the achievement gap between student groups. Title 1, special education and classroom teachers collaborate to provide reading instruction to students in an uninterrupted 90-minute Guided Reading block. Grade level teams collaborate to review and monitor assessment results, instructionally group students and plan interventions in which to improve student achievement.
Baggs Elementary (K-6)

Located in East Cheyenne, Baggs houses grades K-6 and has an average of 310 students. Federal Title I funding supplements the basic program with additional staff and technology aimed at meeting the individual needs of all students. Programs like HOSTS, a one-on-one reading mentoring program, and PTO provide more than 900 volunteer hours of service to our children each year. Baggs has a highly qualified staff as defined by federal, state and district rules, encourages active parent involvement and continually focuses on each individual's maximum achievement.
Bain Elementary (K-6)

Built in 1961, Bain Elementary is located in the Sun Valley area of Cheyenne. The mission of Bain School is to work with students, families, and community to provide a high quality education in a safe, positive environment of mutual respect with opportunities for all students to reach their highest potential, becoming lifelong learners and productive, responsible citizens. Bain's parent/teacher organization actively supports classroom and instructional needs through the purchase of technology for the classrooms, providing learning assemblies, and assisting with major school projects. Bain also enjoys seven Adopt-a-School partnerships that support academic and citizenship awards as well as to provide monetary assistance to the school.
Buffalo Ridge Elementary (K-6)

Buffalo Ridge is a two-section school that was built in 1959 for grades K-6. The school focuses on traditional values, the use of technology, and the arts to prepare students to become lifelong learners. Students learn to appreciate literature, reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, music and art. Buffalo Ridge has a state-of-the-art computer lab and computers are also available in each classroom to enhance daily instruction in all subject areas. The students and staff are involved in a variety of innovative programs that help the school achieve their NCA goals of increasing student achievement in the areas of reading comprehension and writing across content areas. Our families play a vital role in the education at Buffalo Ridge. Parents are encouraged to stay actively involved in their child's educational program. They can do this by volunteering their time to help tutor, plan school and family events, and by helping and encouraging their children to do their very best.
Clawson Elementary (K-6)

Clawson is located thirty-five miles northwest of Cheyenne. The school is in a rural setting and the students come from ranch families. The school is named for Jean Clawson who was the teacher at Clawson for forty years. Students ride a bus on roads that, in the wintertime, may be barely passable.

Cole Elementary offers students a variety of innovative instructional programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse student population of approximately 240. A highly committed staff with a high level of expertise focuses instructional efforts on the development of reading and math skills. Students are provided with an environment that promotes student responsibility, supports student learning and encourages an appreciation of cultural diversity and individual differences. Well-equipped library and computer lab facilities are used extensively to support classroom instruction. Early prevention of school failure is addressed through the LEEP and CLIP intervention strategies in the grades K-2, while the Therapeutic Learning Center serves the emotionally and behaviorally challenged students in grades K-3. Current school-wide initiatives aimed at increasing student achievement include the implementation of a team approach to guided reading instruction, an extended day learning program, the Soar to Success reading intervention, Acccelerated reader and math programs, Bridges, Everyday and Connected math programs
Davis Elementary (K-6)

Davis Elementary is a two-section school located in north Cheyenne. The Davis staff believes in providing a solid basic foundation through the use of differentiated instructional strategies. High expectations are held for students to master basic skills and to use those skills as the basis of higher-level thinking and problem solving. The staff at Davis is highly trained with 75% holding advanced degrees. The parent organization is another of Davis' strengths. Parents play an active role in the school and support their children in the pursuit of academic achievement. A continuous-improvement council of classified staff, certified staff, parents and community members provide input and focus for the school improvement process. Davis has had a tradition of being a leader in providing individualized learning, which meets students learning needs through differentiation in instruction, assessment, and content. The Deming building, grades K-3, is part of Deming/Miller Elementary School. Miller contains grades 4-6. Together, both buildings comprise a one-section elementary school with around 175 students. The Deming building also houses a primary level PALS classroom that contains students with very special educational needs. The staff at Deming/Miller School is committed to provide a quality education in an environment that is safe, friendly and filled with high expectations for student growth. One of its strengths is a strong and active PTO that is very helpful with fundraising, classroom volunteers and participation in various school improvement committees. The goal is to have all students improve in language arts and mathematical problem solving skills. Students receive incentives and rewards for exemplary behavior, meeting high academic standards, modeling excellent citizenship and for regular attendance.
Dildine Elementary (K-6)

Dildine Elementary is one of the largest elementary schools in Wyoming, serving 505 students. The school was named after Frank R. Dildine, who came to Cheyenne in 1901. The students of Dildine Elementary benefit from a staff dedicated to improving student achievement and a highly active PTO. Recent school-wide interventions have focused to increase mathematical computational fluency and to increase responsible interactions among peers and adults. Interventions such as introducing new instructional strategies, technology, parent training and student-incentive programs have been designed to aid in reaching these goals.

Lebhart is a primary school serving grades K-2 (four sections of kindergarten, five of first grade and three of second grade with approximately 221 students) while the intermediate school, Fairview, serves grades 3-6 (two sections each of third through sixth grades with approximately 234 students). Both schools have networked computer labs and tutors to assist students who need additional academic support. Freedom Elementary (K-6)

Freedom Elementary is Cheyenne's most recently constructed elementary school. It serves as the neighborhood school for military children who reside on Warren Air Force Base. This new facility utilizes state-of-the-art wireless technology. Freedom houses two sections of each grade level, kindergarten through sixth grade and three sections of first grade. The kindergarten programs are full-day and class-size reduction occurs in first grade; thereby four reduced-size first grade classes are part of Freedom's educational program. A dedicated staff with high levels of expertise places emphasis on providing students a solid academic foundation and offering students academic challenges. The mission of Freedom Elementary is to provide a safe, learning-focused environment where students, staff, parents, and community contribute to the development of life-long learners who increase academic and social skills and demonstrate respect, accountability, and responsibility.

Goins Elementary works collaboratively with parents to ensure that each child's academic, social, emotional and physical development is enhanced as a result of the educational experience. High behavioral and academic standards are maintained with the goal of helping students become lifelong learners and productive citizens. The building NCA Steering Committee is responsible for developing a comprehensive school improvement plan. Goins' goals are to improve students' math skills, and reading skills. Intervention techniques utilizing teaching strategies, curricular materials, technology, home support and parent training/involvement are designed to support these goals. Students receive incentives for meeting behavioral expectations, meeting high academic standards, attendance, and perseverance and for modeling excellent citizenship.
Gilchrist Elementary (K-6)

Gilchrist Elementary School is a rural school, which serves as the focal point for the local community. Built in 1984, the aesthetically pleasing facility is home to 122 students in grades K-6. Bolstered by an active PTO, a highly committed staff focuses instructional efforts on the development of skills that will enable students to become self-directed lifelong learners and productive citizens. The computer lab and library will be completely remodeled during the summer of 2006, providing students with up-to-date technological enhancements to support classroom instruction. Current school-wide initiatives aimed at increasing student achievement include implementation of Professional Learning Communities, a team approach to Guided Reading, an Extended Day Learning Program, Monthly Student Recognition Assemblies, and emphasis upon the Six Traits of Writing.
Hebard Elementary (K-6)

Hebard Elementary School is located in the South Central part of Cheyenne. We have full day Kindergarten and reduced class size in first, second, third, and fourth grades. Our school has one section of fifth and sixth grades with Title One Tutor assistance. Hebard Elementary is a school-wide Title I school offering additional assistance to all students in the areas of language arts and math. An art room, music room, living skills center, parent lounge, library, resource room, District ESL Program, PALS resource, computer lab and Professional Development Site (PDS), round out the facilities at Hebard.
Henderson Elementary (K-6)

Henderson Elementary was built in the Henderson subdivision of Cheyenne in 1952 as a one-section school housing grades K-6. The building currently houses two sections of K-6. Building enhancements include a computer lab, an art room, music room, two special education rooms and a gym that serves as a multipurpose room. Henderson is located in the East-Central part of the city and boasts a strong PTA and Parent Advisory Council. The Henderson community works together toward our school-improvement goals in reading and math. Parents and community volunteers have demonstrated their support by donating more than 4,500 hours over the past years. Henderson also offers assistance for hearing-impaired students in the district through the Deaf and Hard of Hearing programs. With the motto "Working Together Works," Henderson Elementary is committed to providing a quality education for all students.
Hobbs Elementary (K-6)

Hobbs Elementary School is a three-section school in the northern part of Cheyenne that offers a multi-age program, combining grades 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6. These are in addition to two single-level classrooms at each grade level. We have a class reduction teacher in our first grade, which reduces the number of children in the first-grade classes. There are approximately 490 students enrolled at Hobbs. The educational goal is to prepare students to become lifelong learners by fostering their interest and nurturing their development in all areas, including physical, social, emotional and environmental. Hobbs has a curriculum that is integrated with technology. Along with a 30-computer lab, there is a five-computer research center in the library. Strong parental support is an essential component of our school. This support has helped to fund the computer lab and library research center.
Jessup Elementary (K-6)

Jessup Elementary is located in the northern quadrant of Cheyenne. The school community is comprised of families from the Western Hills neighborhood and a rural area to the north and west of Cheyenne. Students, staff and parents work together toward the school-improvement plan goals in reading, writing and math problem solving. A strong network of parent volunteers supports the instructional program on a daily basis. Ongoing activities like our parent-supported independent reading program are combined with new activities such as Geography Bee to offer students additional academic challenges. During the 2003-2004 school year, Jessup was awarded the No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School Award by the U.S. Dept. of Education. Jessup continues to build a school community committed to providing a quality education for each child. Our mission is to create a learning environment where each person is accountable for acquiring academic skills for life setting and achieving goals demonstrating problem solving skills interacting responsibly and respectfully toward self, others, and the environment.

Pioneer Park Elementary (K-6)

Pioneer Park is located in West Cheyenne. The school has a unique combination of programs serving a variety of populations. The two-unit regular education school serves a walk-in population as well as students from the Air Force base. Also housed in the school is the Trailblazer program, a K-6 academic high-potential school for qualified students from throughout the district. The Therapeutic Learning Center serves behaviorally challenged students in grades 4-6. Pioneer Park School is highly supported by the parents and enjoys a rich tradition and reputation for student success and parent satisfaction.

Rossman Elementary School is located in South Cheyenne near Orchard Valley and the Allison Addition. The facility, named after John Rossman, an early pioneer and businessman, is home to 171 students in grades K-6. An energetic staff offers students a variety of innovative programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse student population. These programs focus upon the development of skills that will enable students to become lifelong learners and productive citizens. Willadsen Elementary (K-6)

Willadsen Elementary School is a K-6 rural school located 20 miles west of Cheyenne directly off I-80 at the Harriman Road exit. The school has one full-time certified teacher and one educational assistant. Willadsen places special emphasis on providing students with a learning environment that is challenging, supportive and caring. Computers are available to enhance daily instruction in all subject areas. Willadsen continues to be the focal point of the community and parents are actively involved in the educational process of their children.

Carey Junior High

Carey Junior High School is a comprehensive, three-year junior high school with an enrollment of 1,083 students. Carey has a strong academic program that ensures special care is given to secure each student's success in academics. With 108 professional staff members, 55 classified employees and one part-time police officer, students are afforded opportunities to succeed, receive special help and develop individual responsibility for themselves, the school and their community. Carey also fields strong extracurricular programs to broaden its students' experiences. Carey has outstanding programs for students of varying abilities. Educational programs for the severe and profound as well as for honors students are provided by a professional, caring staff. The elective offerings are nearly as diverse as the student population; therefore, students can enroll in classes that suit their interests and talents. Carey has a closed campus, but parents are always encouraged to visit the school. Special effort is made to keep parents informed of students' progress.
Johnson Junior High

Johnson is a comprehensive, three-year junior high school with an enrollment of more than 850 students. There were 314 seventh-grade students, 305 eight-grade students and 253 ninth-grade students, all served by 160 staff members. Programs of study at Johnson include ROTC, art, English, foreign language, family consumer science, math, music, physical education, introduction to physical science, social studies, technical education, resource, behavior lab, transitional seventh and ninth grades, and honors classes in English, geometry and social studies. As a public junior high school, Johnson's effort is to successfully develop the total individual. The staff at Johnson strives to nurture lifelong learners who are capable of contributing to a global society. To accomplish this, they provide a safe, supportive and accessible educational environment. Johnson offers opportunities for family and community involvement and for students to give back to society through a variety of teaching strategies. McCormick Junior High

McCormick Jr. High - Home of the Warriors McCormick Junior High School is a comprehensive, three-year school with an enrollment of approximately 1,170 students. McCormick's day consists of seven 47-minute classes, a fifteen minute reading period and a 15 minute home-room. Programs of study include agriculture, art, computers/keyboarding, drama, family and consumer science, foreign language, math, music, language arts, physical education/health, ROTC, science, social studies, speech and technology education. Additional services are provided to students through the behavior lab, resource and transitional seventh-grade classes. Prep for A.P. courses are offered in English, math and social studies. McCormick has 103 certified staff members and 39 classified. McCormick's 59-classroom facility includes two gymnasiums, a weight room, a library, and an auditorium. Five computer labs provide 165 computers for student use, each classroom has a computer for teacher use and other classrooms have additional computers for student use, i.e. newspaper/yearbook classroom, science classrooms. Students are able to participate in sports, intramurals and organizations. A wide variety of co-curricular activities are available. McCormick is proud of its commitment to strive for educational excellence through knowledge, skills, respect and responsibility.

Central High

Central High School has a well-deserved reputation of high academic achievement, championship athletic programs, and successful clubs and organizations, including the 2003 Pro-Start National Champion Culinary Arts Team. Central is a comprehensive, three-year senior high that offers a modified block schedule and varied curriculum to its student body of approximately 1,200 students. Advanced Placement courses are available to students in English literature and English composition, chemistry, physics, biology, U.S. government, U.S. history, world geography, world history, micro and macro economics, art, music theory, environmental science, calculus AB and calculus BC. Concurrent enrollment agreements with community colleges now exist to allow and encourage students to earn college credit while in high school in computer science, calculus, English composition, construction technology, auto body, drafting, health occupations and culinary arts. All students have extended learning opportunities through the Education Station and extended-day classes. As an NCA-accredited institution, Central is proud of the faculty and students who work together to achieve academic performance that exceeds state and national norms on the PAWS, SAT, and ACT tests.
East High

East High School is an NCA accredited, comprehensive high school with an enrollment of approximately 1,351 students. The school offers a variety of academic programs to meet the needs of its students. Course offerings include the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program for ninth through 12th graders, 12 Advanced Placement courses, concurrent enrollment courses for which students receive both high school and college credit, as well as a variety of courses in the core and elective areas such as AFJROTC, agriculture, art, business, computer science, driver's education, family and consumer science, foreign languages, health occupations, health and physical education, industrial technology, marketing, music, speech and debate, and television production. Courses are geared to prepare students for post-secondary opportunities at colleges/universities, technical schools, the armed forces or in the workplace. East High School offers an extensive variety of outstanding extra-curricular activities. In addition, East students are consistently recognized at the local, state, regional and national levels in many areas such as athletics, band, choir/chorale, orchestra, DECA, FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, mock trial, speech and debate and VICA. Triumph High School

Triumph High School is an alternative school of choice. Enrollment is voluntary and is granted on an application-only basis. All students who attend are expected to accept and sign a shared responsibility agreement that lists staff expectations for student attendance, productivity and behavior and the consequences for agreement violation. The curriculum at Triumph High School features a new-student orientation program, an adviser/advisee program, multi-age grouping, classes that are open to most students in grades 8-12, traditional and nontraditional pathways to graduation and an evening open-entry, open-exit program. All students are provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of multi-disciplinary integrated learning projects that allow them to apply what they have learned and promote the development of cooperation and teamwork. Cultural enrichment days have been implemented to strengthen inter- and intra-personal skills.
CBOE is another alternative program that is a part of Triumph High School, but is located in the Clark Building. CBOE places emphasis on business education. Entrepreneurship, management, employability and other related skills are taught in the classroom and through working relationships with local businesses. In addition to standard academic studies, the high school students research and develop individual career and business plans with specialized curriculum.

Community Based Occupational Education (CBOE) is an alternative educational program that places emphasis on learning through various methodologies. The program uses the business world's rules and regulations to help students gain employable skills as well as all of the academic assessments and standards that the State of Wyoming and Laramie County School District 1 requires from all students. The program utilizes the community businesses to help motivate students to visualize themselves in the future; therefore helping students focus on staying in school and reaching their goals. Numerous employers and community people actively work on projects with the students, which builds positive relationships and provides meaning to learning.
CBOE's student enrollment is limited to 50. Smaller environment + fewer teachers + business rules + high realistic expectations + different teaching methodologies + community involvement = STUDENT ACADEMIC/BUSINESS SUCCESS. Success can mean many things to our students: college, military, trade school, on-the-job-training, apprenticeships, being an entrepreneur or stay-at-home parents who can support themselves.
