News and Accomplishments
VAPOR Project
Project information is available at: http://www.vapor.ucar.edu
WASP Award:
John attended a NSF SI2 PI meeting in Washington D.C. and presented a poster on the project.
KISTI Award:
John reviewed wish list items from KISTI, evaluated their effort and general value to the broader VAPOR community, and prepared and submitted a proposal to KISTI for CY15.
2.x Development:
Efforts continued to provide a supported 2.4 VAPOR release:
- Numerous existing bugs were fixed
- John devised a test plan
- Installers were created for all platforms. New installers were required to resolve problems with mucking with the user's environment on windows.
- Regression testing began
Scott acquired a new series of GRIB datasets from Sandor that are formatted in the standard that ECMWF uses for their forecasts. These files are on a hybridsigma pressure level system (similar to CAM) but use a different calculation for height. The GRIB converter is currently unable to handle this data due to this vertical coordinate system.
The entire team worked with Steve Geinosky to migrate the VAPOR website to drupal 7, and perform numerous structural changes. This was a substantial undertaking. We made numerous website changes to ensure there will be minimal disruption when the site goes live. This will coincide with the release of VAPOR 2.4.0. Scott updated documentation on the transfer function on the website, and created a higher resolution VAPOR logo that had transparency for the new website.
3.x Development
Progress all continued with 3.0 GUI prototyping. Alan made changes in the GUI for 3.0 based on Scott’s previous suggestions. We reviewed them and identified several additional changes needed to make navigation easier in the tabs. John reviewed the resulting changes for usability.
John began adding support in VDC3 for missing values, and documented DCWRF class.

Education and Outreach:
Scott composed a tutorial on VAPOR and uploaded it to YouTube. The tutorial consists of four videos and lasts just under an hour. He also created a “Google Page” for vapor under the suggestion from Mark Bradford so that the entire team can manage the page and videos together. This would also allow us to link some (but not all) of our videos onto the UCARConnect YouTube channel, which Teri Eastburn has approved us for administrator privileges.
John reviewed SCIparCS applicants.
Software Research Projects
John arranged for U. of Oregon student collaborator to visit this summer to continue working on scientific data compression.
