Essential Principle: Atmospheric circulations transport gases, particles, and energy.

Welcome to Session 5C Atmospheric Circulations Transport gases, particles, and energy (and momentum?)

The session is now in a internal "breakout." Each group is discussing elements of circulation.

SubGroup 1: topics in discussion:  differential heating, starting with the concepts familiar to middle/high school level, patterns of circulation that can be observed at many different levels...

Note: Please remember to refresh your browser every 30-60 seconds.

SubGroup 2: points noted:

  • "The atmos. transports water vapor and particles that impact the formation of precipitation. It is component important of the global water cycle."
  • "Circultaion(s) distribute energy, water, gases, particles, globally establishing climate, weather, and upper atmos. patterns that impact life (air quality, droughts, floods, wildfire, sever storms, satellite and comm. systems, pwr. grids"
  •  "Energy exchanges occur at the atmospheric boundaries which in turn have an interface with the ocean, land, space and sun. These energy exchanges drive circulation(s)."

SubGroup 1: Pollution transport...what is "pollution"

Robert Ridky - "What we are talking about is a framework to talk about transport."

comment - atmos. transports natural and human produced nat. and human produced; these particles can be harmful to human health.

"...atmosphere produces extreme "episodic" events of enormous energy"

"....result in hurricanes, tornadoes, extreme wx events

Note: Internal "breakout" will conclude in 2 mins (9:41 am)

SubGroup 1 has added questions to the E.P.

  • Q: Circulation or circulations?
  • Q:Transport momentum or trnsfer momentum?
  •  Structure and composition of atmosphere should be in EP?
  • EP2: Should include sun variability and other forces (IR heating (indirect solar response), Coriolis force etc.) which give rise to the cirulation
  • EP4: The atmos. changes over time and space, giving rise to wx, climate, and space wx (reword)
  •  EP1: Should include aerosols , basic chemical structure, and ionosphere (including upper atmos.)

Point: These fundamental concepts lind to other essential principles and should reinforce the system approach
Fundamental Concepts:

  •  Patterns of circulation can be observed at different levels from the global to local. The spin of the Earth and difference in atmos. heating/pressure establish the basic circulation.
  • The atmos. transports water vapor and particles that impact the formation of precipitation. It is component important of the global water cycle.
  • Circultaion(s) distribute energy, water, gases, particles, globally establishing climate, weather, and upper atmos. patterns that impact life (air quality, droughts, floods, wildfire, sever storms, satellite and comm. systems, pwr. grids
  •  Energy exchanges occur at the atmospheric boundaries which in turn have an interface with the ocean, land, space and sun. These energy exchanges drive circulation(s)."
  • Matter exchanges at the atmos. boundaries affect other important cycles that are essential to life (carbon cycle, nitrogen, cycle, potosynthesis
  • Technology enables s to observe, model and predict circulation transport in the atmosphere (EP6)
  • Human activities contribute to

DISCUSSION AT THIS POINT: 10:17 - Susan Avery offers...: "What are the properties of a system?"

...Peter Tuddenham: "Ocean Literacy" piece he co-developed continues to capture basic concepts.

...Robert Rikey "uni." in university brings together

SESSION is ending for break 10:22

Note: All 8 EPs will be detailed in the ppt to be posted shortly. Susan Avery-session recorder- is completing the ppt with Peter Tuddenham.

...Early Session Activity

Note: Internal "breakout" has concluded (9:48 am)

Discussion Begins:

  •     SubGroup 1 recorder is entering  groups points to projection system...
  • James R. Leaf is commenting on Native American (Lakota) EPs to include
    • relationship: human to ecosystem, needs to be addressed more
    • other people, native, should be included
  •  Comment: Howard is representing African American interests
  • Comment: Hampton has a good center
  • Comment: ...social science should be included in the discussion

Please scroll up. The group is now clarifying and unifying the Fundamental Concepts above.
