Kurt, Steve, and I visited s7 and added an external cell antenna with a small piece of angle iron as the ground plane. It actually came back online just as we got there, before we attached the antenna. I logged into the DSM with the Acer and browsed to the cell modem web interface, but I was unable to check the signal level before and after attaching the antenna because the left mouse button on the touchpad is broken. We at least verified it came up after plugging the modem back in.
We visited S10 and attached a cell antenna there also. Kurt powered it down briefly to adjust some wiring. Then we verified that Internet and data stats were working. The antenna cable at S10 has exposed wire, so it needs to be wrapped with some black tape at some point. Right now the bad spots are coiled up and ready to be sealed in tape.
Steve did most of the boat operation and more of the navigating, as Kurt tries to teach us the lay of the marsh. We went the long way both in and out. We boated passed S3, but the stake says S1, so that needs to be fixed.
Steve and I have many of the sites marked on our phones, but since google maps does not show all the channels that are needed to get to all the sites, I would like to find an accurate paper navigation chart or topo map. Also I bet there are better phone apps for charting waterways, but I haven't looked.
The cell antenna ground planes are just small pieces of iron scrounged up in the trailer. We also considered using the metal bookends. If any other sites have trouble connecting, it might be worth buying small pieces of sheet metal to give the antennas a proper ground plane, but I'm not an RF engineer so I'm just guessing. 
A few other sites already have antennas that were mounted without ground planes.
Task list:
- Cover exposed antenna wire at S10 with black tape.
- Buy a small mouse to use with the Acer since the mouse button doesn't work.
- Buy a navigation chart for the marsh and research waterway phone apps.
- Consider getting "proper" ground planes for the sites that already have antennas.
- Fix the stake label at S3.
Here, I'm just checking that signals are coming in. I'm also rserialing into each port to see generally that things are okay (but not <really> looking at numbers).
I do notice the many stations that do not yet have power monitors connected (no ttyS1 data).
s11, s12 power motes have a different output than others (extra fields). Perhaps this is known...
I also looking at files and file sizes. I note that the usbdisk on s4 is now at 19%. s11 was at 32%, but there was almost a month of July test data. I just deleted these files. s12 also had old files and deleting them changed usbdisk from 31% to 8%. s13 and s14 also had July files that I removed. s2 and s4 have some July files that I haven't yet bothered to remove.
To check s15 mote data, I manually installed mote_dump into /opt/nidas/scripts, since it appeared to have been omitted. It isn't needed on the other dsms.

In randomly looking at site 12, I noticed that the CSAT wasn't coming in. I tried cycling power with eio 5 0/1 and even a ddn/dup, to no avail. I wondered if the Gill, still wired to port 4, could generate enough spurious interrupts to cause data from port 5 to stop. Thus, I changed the vertex.xml to look for Gill data on port 6 (like we did on station 8) and then rebooted the entire station. It came back up and now the CSAT is there. I don't know how long it had been down – clearly it was up when I did my "Quickie status" on Saturday.

We now have 10 stations installed, 5 to go. Weather has been a bit more forgiving, and I hope to have all done by Thursday.
We have a slight problem with the cataraft engine - the fuel line started leaking yesterday, and with a field fix we were able to continue, but I will need some new parts on Monday.
Just grabbed and plotted 8 hours of data from today to start looking at things. Got data from stations 2,3,4,9,10,12,13. (Only a partial file from 12, since it apparently was restarted in the middle of the day.)
In general, everything looked okay (see below). I looked at the variables: spd, dir, w, tc.5m (should be changed to .3m), T, RH.2m, Spd, Dir.10m. The only issue was that birds definitely interfere with the Gill at stations 10 & 13 – perhaps at 2 as well. I entered the boom directions for the csats, but not the gills, so I see the Gill at s4 different (but close to correct with respect to north) from the others by about 180 deg, which is expected.
I also note that the vertical velocities are quite small and don't vary, indicating both that the set-up crew did a great job of leveling the towers and that a turbine wake is not visible (expected since the winds were generally from the wrong direction).
HOWEVER, the Gill at s12 is bad. When I rserial to it, I get binary gibberish. I have now checked (using minicom) that this isn't a baud rate issue. I've also verified that "tp4" shows the same settings (120ohm termination, normal slew) as for s13, which is working. (I also played with these settings and didn't noticably change the signal.) I conclude that this is not a problem with DSM settings, but a cabling issue or something in the Gill itself.
Sites 4, 9, 10, and 13 online, but 11, 12, and 14 offline
I just talked with John. They setup 4 and 14 today, but 14 never came online. Both 14 and 11 are Vipers, so John wonders if that's part of the problem. John said he had poor cell coverage for his third-party cell phone, but Matt has Verizon and his signal was adequate. It seems unlikely that this is a signal strength problem. Both 11 and 14 had some trouble during the outside testing, as noted in JIRA issues ISFS-99 and ISFS-103.
Site 12 went offline today around 11:13 am MDT, and at the moment it has not come back. Site 12 is a Titan.
Possible Workarounds
Maybe we'll have to implement something to restart the cell modem interface if it appears to be down... However, in the meanwhile, here are a couple things to try. The first is to unplug the USB modem and then plug it back in. The second achieves something similar but without unplugging anything, and it has worked once before. Log into the DSM and enter these commands:

rmmod cdc_ether
rmmod usbnet
modprobe cdc_ether
exit
Finally, John will check on the space on the media disk on each DSM. Probably there is plenty of space, but we don't need any of the pre-project data, and we should make sure to give ourselves as much time as possible to record offline until we can visit the site and get the Internet connection up.
As we're setting up we'll put in the numbers we're recording...
Note St9 is slightly different because we didn't notice until later that the compass had a previous non-zero deviation cranked in, which we subsequently removed and took the 'correct reading'. ie. all compass readings are with respect to a '0-degree' deviation angle.
Note: Sonic angles are looking into the boom. ie the sensors are pointing to the northeast roughly toward the wind generator.
Note: Gill angles are looking from the boom to the SE. The red dot is oriented pointed toward the boom, ie 180+reading.
CHECK/EDIT: Note Comms (8/19): It's possible that cell coverage is more spotty on the west side of the network and links may not be as good. At one point we thought Vipers had a unique problem connecting but on 8/19, site 2 came up just fine, whereas sites on the west have had significantly more drops.

On port 3, cktty shows:

74 characters transmitted (by the gps configure program) but only 74 (echo?) received.
This looks to me like its connector has fallen loose from the interface panel.
So that this system has good time, Gary suggested we configure a chrony server for it, so I un-commented:
server 0.debian.pool.ntp.org offline minpoll 8
in /etc/chrony/chrony.conf, via sudoedit, and then
sudo service chrony restart
Chrony now shows that it is synced to the network server:

Well, here we are in Lewes De. and is it hot!All personnel are now here for the set up phase as of last night and we have finally got the boats and motors in hand.The 15 foot Jon boat was purchased yesterday, and the cataraft was constructed.We picked up the motor for the cataraft today and installed it on the boat.We also took both boats out onto the water this afternoon for a test cruise and pronounced them both sea worthy.The base is in place and mostly set up, although I can see we will have to look into a place to store all the empty sensor boxes and extra hardware.Possibly a storage establishment close to the campus.Our plan is to enter the marsh tomorrow to begin the infrastructure installations.Kevin Beam will join us on Friday to assist with station locations.
It has been a long but good day.With Kevin Beams help we have located 12 sites and installed tripods at 10 of them bringing the total to 12 sites so far with some infrastructure at each. Still needs much work at each site, but looking good so far.All are tired and going to bed.Good night!

heat is brutal, progress slow.Still working out details of boat operations (modified shop cataraft motor mount at the end of today).We installed two tripods only today, 10 hrs worked.(stations 6 and 12)Good news is the foot pads and screw anchors seem to work ok, but need to step up installation process.Transit times and access due to tides are proving to be unnerving.Modifying the installation procedure as we go to step up the progress.Hope to improve tomorrow...Will keep you informed.
